Shelter Botswana Increased capacity

Shelter Botswana has been able to expand its capacity to 50 students thanks to the help of some of you wonderful people!

Previously they had enough classrooms, teachers and space for 50 children, but they only had enough toilets for a capacity of 30 students. Last year some of you helped us to put in an additional three bathrooms, and now the shelter has just received its new licence to take in up to 50 children!

They also just had 13 students graduate at the end of last year, so now, wonderfully, they have lots of spaces to fill with students who need support.

The shelter takes in children aged 2-6 who are referred to them by social workers. Often orphans or children who come from tough social or financial home situations. Shelter Botswana provides them with preschool education by qualified teachers, food, clothes, medical and social care.

For these children, Shelter Botswana is their refuge; it’s a safe place to play with friends, get the nourishment and social and medical care they need, and a place they can learn to read, write and count so that when they start government primary school, they will not be starting behind their peers and they will be far less likely to drop out of school later on. Shelter Botswana is also partnered with Bana Ba Leteatsi, which supports children of school-going age.

We are happy to say that all 13 students who graduated last year have just started in different government primary schools in Maun (the town where Shelter Botswana is situated, on the edge of the Okavango delta). At the end of last year, some local churches joined together to host a graduation ceremony for them; below are some of the pictures from this.

Thank you so much to all of you who support Shelter Botswana; it means a huge amount to us and to all the children and families the shelter supports.

If you would like to donate to Shelter Botswana to help them take in and look after these new students, you can do so through our foundation!
