Teacher Michael

Today, we would like to celebrate Michael, a remarkable young educator whose story reminds us of the power of perseverance.

Michael’s journey is one of quiet determination. As he has said: “I come from a family of seven sibilings, where life has not always been easy. Raised in deep poverty, I have witnessed struggle first-hand. My mother, who is disabled, has been a pillar of strength despite her condition, and watching her fight through life every day has shaped my resilience and determination.

This determination led Michael to work tirelessly to pursue his dream of becoming a teacher. He had travelled to Nairobi and was working as a cleaner to cover the costs of his studies when some RAS guests met him. Touched by his humility and drive, they kindly stepped in to sponsor him through the rest of his Bachelor of Education (Science) degree.

Recently, during his teaching practice, Michael encountered students with hearing impairments and was deeply affected by his inability to communicate with them. That moment ignited a new goal: to learn Kenyan Sign Language and become the kind of teacher who leaves no child behind.

Thanks to the kindness of these same donors, Michael is now going to start Kenyan Sign Language training at the Kenyan Institute of Special Education. We want to say a heartfelt thank you to those who made this possible. Your support is not only empowering Michael, but also the many learners he will go on to inspire and include.

“Every learner deserves to be seen, heard, and supported,” Michael says. “Thanks to your support, I can now take this next step to make that possible.”

If you would like to support other students like Michael, you can do so through our Education Sponsorships Program. Your contribution can help provide opportunities for future teachers, leaders, and changemakers who need to be given the chance to realise their potential.
