Staying in School Shelter Botswana

Shelter Botswana preschool cares for orphans, children with HIV and children living in extreme poverty in Maun, which is on the southern edge of the Okavango. Together we have been supporting the Shelter for four years to provide these children with three meals a day, quality preschool education and medical and social care.

We are proud to say that despite the challenges last year 14 students successfully graduated from the Shelter, and all of them are now settled into government primary schools! Thanks to your support, they are not starting behind their peers and won’t be victim to the achievement gaps throughout their educational careers that come from missing out on preschool education. This also means they will be less likely to drop out of school later on. The Shelter will continue to stay in touch with them, as will the Shelter’s partner organisation Bana Ba Letatsi which supports students of school-going age in Maun.

The Shelter has taken in 7 more students this year who were referred to them by social workers, and there have been one or two understandable behaviour challenges, but mostly they have settled in really well so far.

The children also love their new vegetable patch, which they have had three harvests from already this year! As you can see it is providing them with fresh fruit and vegetables for their meals and lots of opportunities to learn about how to grow food!

Ka le Boga, thank you, for supporting the Shelter and helping these children to access these life-changing services. We look forward to continuing to keep you up to date with all their news!
