Kenya LaMCoT

Thanks to Lamu Marine Conservation Trust (LAMCOT), the Lamu community is committed to protecting its beautiful marine ecosystem and the endangered sea turtles that nest on their beaches. These turtles include critically endangered Hawksbill turtles, endangered Green turtles and vulnerable Olive Ridley turtles.

LAMCOT has an effective turtle protection program. Community members who used to poach turtle nests are now LAMCOT nest protectors. They have realised the value of the turtles and benefit from protecting them and taking visitors (such as yourselves) to watch the hatchings. LAMCOT also has a tag-and-release program for adult turtles. Data collected from these activities is key to monitoring the health of the sea turtle populations that nest in Lamu.

To preserve Lamu’s marine ecosystem for current and future generations, LAMCOT run education & awareness programs. They currently help facilitate weekly Environmental Kindness Clubs in 14 schools across the archipelago. They also arrange excursions into the field for kids involved in their Environmental Kindness Clubs to visit turtle nesting sites, mangrove restoration projects, marine conservation areas, historical and cultural sites, undertake beach clean-ups and much more. Moreover, they have other education programs to get adults excited about conservation and show them how it can be a part of their economic livelihood and way of life. Other activities include an alternative sustainable livelihoods program and a waste collection and management program.

In 2022, with your support, they launched their first Bahari Yetu Festival. Bahari Yetu means ‘Our Ocean’ in Swahili.

This year, you have once again supported this festival and covered the cost of two schools to attend it, where they will learn about various marine conservation issues and partake in activities, including the Recycled Art Competition.
