Kenya Loisaba Students

Loisaba Conservancy in Laikipia, Kenya, sponsors a number of students each year from communities that surround the conservancy, and last year some of you generously donated to the conservancy and these funds went towards the Tertiary Education Sponsorship of Peter, James and Boniface.

Peter is being supported for his three year Animal Health and Rangeland Management Course at The Animal Health and Industry Training Institute in Kabete. He has just finished his first year, and we checked in with how he is getting on and he said so far he has enjoyed learning about “pastures that are suitable to be established especially at our community and also at Loisaba in some places where pasture growth is required for both wild and domestic animals. The grass variety is called mullato (II). It is a drought resistant grass, pest resistant, suitable in medium or low fertile soil and can do best even in areas with acidic soils. Also on rangeland management, I learnt how to control stocking and achieve a proper stocking rate. I also gained a general knowledge of controlling rangeland degradation and bringing back rangeland to normal conditions for the sake of the next generations. On the side of animal health I have gained knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of both domestic and wild animals. I have learned how to undertake treatment of various diseases that affects our animals there. I have already been involved in some treatment campaigns like rabies treatment and anthrax treatment which are the dangerous zoonotic infections.”

James is being supported through his three year Mechanical Engineering course at Laikipia North Technical and Vocational College. He has just finished his first year and he said “I am so happy for Loisaba Conservancy supporting my vision towards achieving my dreams as in my community very few people go for hands on courses and for me I am passionate about leaving the college and being ready to work immediately after graduating. The school is providing me all the necessary support I need in my education from theories to practicals and I can’t take all these support for granted. I am thankful once again to Loisaba conservancy and those who support it.”

Boniface is being supported for his three year Information Technology Course at The Rift Valley Institute of Science and Technology. He has just finished his first year and this week he said “Looking back, my first two semesters of college have been fantastic trying to catch up with the college life. As I embark on my next year, I feel more confident and prepared to tackle whatever lies ahead, knowing that college is not just about earning a diploma but also about discovering myself and shaping my future and my family’s future too.”
