When we were making other infrastructure improvements to the Laresoro Community Dispensary in 2022, the dispensary team requested a tuk-tuk to be able to drive to remote villages to offer bi-monthly backpack nurse clinics and to take patients to the county hospital.

With the help of our Royal African Foundation family, we provided them with a tuk-tuk, and together, in partnership with Kalama Community Conservancy, our Laresoro Tuk Tuk has helped to bridge the gap between isolated villages and essential healthcare since then.

For hundreds of families living alongside Kalama Community Conservancy’s wildlife, the Tuk Tuk has meant the difference between receiving health care and not. It has also become a tangible symbol of the benefits of conservation.

The beneficiaries of the backpack nurse clinics have mostly been mamas and children who have received medical services like antenatal and postnatal monitoring, vaccinations, and nutritional supplements. Without this tuk tuk they wouldn’t have been able to access this medical care, given the long distances to the clinic and the dangers posed by wildlife along the way.

The tuk-tuk has also helped to transport mothers during labour to the dispensary, and this is something they and their families have been very grateful for. For example, as Lkubwa Lenyakopiro from Nakwamor said, “I was away from home when my wife went into labour, but the Tuk Tuk collected her and took her to the dispensary, and their quick response saved her life. I am very thankful for such a provision.”

The Tuk Tuk has also served as a lifesaving emergency vehicle transporting emergency patients to Archer’s Level 4 Sub-County Hospital, including mothers in complex cases of obstructed labour, children with severe malaria, and victims of serious injuries.
