Kenya Entasopia Primary School

Entasopia Primary School is near the Nguruman Escarpment in the Great Rift Valley in Kenya. It is part of the Olkiramatian Conservancy, which has been developed by the local Maasai community to protect their wildlife, traditional lifestyle, and heritage.

At the start of this year it had 671 pupils (339 boys, 332 girls) but only 4 toilets for girls and 7 for boys.

Now, thanks to your support and the team at the nearby Lentorre Lodge, a girl’s toilet block has been built with 8 more toilets, a changing room, a shower, and water taps for hand washing.

Mr. Douglas Mwangi, the Head Teacher of Entasopia Primary, said:

‘The new toilets will reduce congestion and will improve the menstrual hygiene of girls since they will have a shower, water taps, and changing rooms. It’s a safe place for them to change sanitary towels and shower. This will give them confidence so that they will not worry about menstruation and they can attend school freely.’

Mr. Mwangi’s point is supported by research in Kenya, which shows that “an increase in the school toilet availability per student significantly raises the primary school attendance rate among both boys and girls. Moreover, the effects are larger for girls than for boys, and especially for pubescent girls.”

So, thank you so much for supporting these toilets and, more importantly, these girls to keep attending school.
