Tanzania - Alakra Nekura and Baby

Nekura and Baby are two of the students being sponsored through Alakra, which is an organisation RAS Partner Tim Corfield started in Tanzania to help women to take control of their lives through education and skills training.

This is Nekura’s story:

“My name is Nekura. I am a Maasai by tribe and a form three student at Mwedo Girls Secondary School. I am sixteen years old and am a first born in my family, I was born at Moita which is a village in Maasai land.

In my family both my parents are still alive and I have sisters and a brother. My family lives in poverty due to my father having very few cattle, goats and sheep, and my mother is uneducated and helps him at our boma which is home. They struggle to provide the basic needs of life and instead of being able to help me with education my father wanted me to be married to an older man and start a family of my own.

Through the efforts of my sister who works for Mr. Tim at Alakra my family situation was brought to the attention of safari guests of Mr. Tim. They have been sponsoring me to go to secondary school at Mwendo Secondary School since I started in form one and I really enjoy it. We do sports and games, computer lessons, reading novels and studying hard. My favorite subjects are civics, history, English and Kiswahili. I hope that one day I will find work in an organization of helping girls and Maasai woman. I would say thank you to them for sponsoring me and I promise them that they will never regret helping me. And I am also grateful to Mrs Eustellah from Alakra and Miss Emma from Royal African Foundation for their help towards me too. My almighty God bless you! Thank you.”

This is Baby’s story:

My name is Baby, I am fifteen years old. I was born in Moita Dispensary. My home place is Moita Bwawani in a part of Maasailand that is not too far from Arusha. I am the last born in my family out of eight children, and unlike all my brothers and sisters my parents I decided to look for an opportunity to be educated. So now my brothers and sisters remain at home helping with livestock and farming.

My good friend Salome, who got educated through the efforts of Mr. Tim who started Alakra, put my name forward for sponsorship. A safari guest of Mr. Tim’s got to hear of my story and very kindly donated funds for me. Now I am studying at Mwendo Girls Secondary School which I am enjoying so much. I want to study hard with my all effort so that I can help my parents, my family and other people at home.

In school mostly I like studying but also enjoy sports and games like netball which keeps me fit. My favorite subject is the English language because I would like to be a lawyer. I would like to thank (my kind sponsor) and her family for sponsoring me, and Mr. Tim and Mrs. Eustellah in Alakra and Miss Emma for all the help they give me. And I know that my Mum and Dad are also very grateful.”

We are so proud of them both and what they have achieved so far!
