Kenya Emurutoto Primary School

We’re proud to share the successful completion of a much-requested infrastructure project at Emurutoto Primary School outside Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve: the construction of new girls’ and boys’ ablution blocks. This project has transformed daily life for over 1,500 students, improving health, hygiene, dignity, and the overall learning environment at this school.

Before this project, just eight toilets served the entire student population, resulting in long lines, discomfort, and missed class time. With the completion of the new blocks in January this year, the students now have a further 16 toilets.

The project was implemented by Wild Impact, and the blocks were built by local construction workers, which brought additional investment to the Emurutoto community.

Despite challenging construction conditions—including hard rock that required a redesign of the facilities—the work was completed on time and to a high standard, and they have now had the official handover ceremony of the two ablution blocks.

Grade 4 student Hillary Leshoo said:“On behalf of all the boys at Emurutoto school, I want to express our heartfelt gratitude for the incredible gift … the new ablution block. It has really brought a tremendous positive change to our school. The new toilets are very important to us as they will improve our hygiene and dignity. .. we will cherish and take good care of this facility.”

You helped us respond to this community’s plea for improved infrastructure at their school, and they are extremely grateful.

This project has come off the back of the previous year’s success, when your support helped bring clean, accessible water to Iltlolish Primary School, Saparingo Primary School, and the Emurutoto Craft Centre, through the provision of guttering and water storage tanks, which meant that students no longer needed to walk long distances to fetch water each day. This has not only improved their health and safety but also freed up valuable learning time and allowed schools to set up handwashing stations, tree nurseries, and small gardens.
