DRC Virunga Alliance

Located in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, Virunga National Park is the oldest and most biologically diverse protected area in Africa.

Unfortunately, the park has been threatened by armed conflict for over 20 years, as well as illegal poaching and land encroachment from the four million people that live on its borders.

Virunga Alliance (VA) is a public-private partnership that is responding to these challenges. It has over 700 rangers that risk their lives to protect Virunga’s wildlife including its endangered mountain gorilla population.

It is also working to bring peace and prosperity to the region through sustainable development. Their vision is to deliver large scale opportunities for the local communities surrounding the park in the areas of hydropower, sustainable agriculture and fisheries and tourism.

Thank you to the guests who have donated to the alliance or to SAVE Virunga campaigns for your part in supporting this critical work which is securing the future of this wilderness area.
