Royal African Foundation Project Spotlight

This is Mr Lemarampa, one of the two dedicated nurses at Laresoro Community Health Clinic. The clinic is in the Kalama Community Wildlife Conservancy next to the Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya.

Many of you have met members of this pastoralist community who live alongside and protect the area’s wildlife and wild landscapes.

Mr Lemarampa and his team of two Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) community health workers and ten community health volunteers serve a very dispersed population of around 2500 people. All consultations, referrals, prescriptions, dispensing and inoculations happen at this clinic, or at the outreach day-camps the team run in the far-flung villages.

The community have some great plans for the expansion and improvement of the clinic, which include:

– Developing a maternity facility to give the many women and girls who develop complications during pregnancy and childbirth a safe space to give birth with medical assistance. As you may know, childbirth is the biggest killer of teenage girls worldwide.

– Building ablution facilities to meet the sanitation needs of the many patients visiting the facility.

– Solar electricity and a solar-powered refrigerator so that staff can better tend to patients past daylight hours and better store medicines.

We want to say a big thank you to those of you who have already donated a total of $28,375 to help make these plans a reality. You will make such a difference to the wellbeing of this community who are the custodians of Kalama’s wildlife.

 We are working with NRT to raise the remaining $68,825 the community need to expand and improve their clinic. The community is also planning on putting their own money from NRT towards the clinic.
