Big Life Chyulu Rhino Project
New Rhino Calf
At the end of last year, an eastern black rhino was born in Chyulu Hills National Park in Southern Kenya.
Eastern black rhino populations are slowly growing thanks to incredible conservation efforts, but they are still critically endangered; there are only around 1,000 in the wild and only 7 adults in the Chyulus, making each birth a fantastic cause for celebration.
Thanks to the tireless work of Big Life and KWS Rangers and the natural fortress of dense vegetation and volcanic rock hills these rhinos call home, not a single rhino has been lost to poachers in more than 8 years, but there have been natural losses.
Little rhino calves are very vulnerable, but at the time of writing, the calf is believed to still be alive and well, so we continue to celebrate it. Its sex is still unknown, but below are some camera trap photos of it and its mother making their way through the dense bush on the Chyulu hills.
With your support, we are also continuing to work with the East African Wildlife Society and Big Life on the advocacy for the national park, part of which is being threatened by a court case which affects part of the current rhino habitat. This case is also stalling the wider rhino translocation project that could help this population and the species grow. We are up against slow bureaucratic processes, but we refuse to give up and will report when we have news.
If you would like to support this project and these rhinos, you can do so through our Royal African Foundation. Thank you so much to those of you who already have!
